The government is set out to shut down Netflix. Okay, maybe that is a little dramatic but the issue is somewhere on the horizon of possibility due to the looming topic of the “War of Net Neutrality”.
In brief, net neutrality is the concept that the Internet is a free, nondiscriminatory service to all users. The so called “war” taking place currently in the court system is due to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the case of Verizon v. FCC that the DC circuit court that ruled to battle 2010 net neutrality laws in existence.
Basically what this means in normal words is that cable providers like AT&T, Comcast and Time Warner Cable can decide to provide faster, better service or completely block any website, video, blog, Netflix or this super cool blog you’re reading right now solely based on your provider.
Netflix is a topic of major concern not only because of America’s (serious) addiction, but because of the ability for Internet providers to completely ban Netflix to their users as companies like Comcast who are competitors to Netflix can use this to their advantage, therefore pushing the ever so popular television/movie site into a dark corner.
Hopefully our government and the American people realize the importance of net neutrality ASAP because time is running out as big cable companies are slowly gaining governmental backing for Internet control over users. Until then, all I have to say is I’m rooting for net neutrality and Netflix.
