Can you imagine trying to access the Internet only to be redirected to a blank page for 8 hours? Can you image the ENTIRE United States not being able to access the Internet? One would assume the world would end, right?
Well, China lost Internet for a solid 8 hours last Tuesday with all sites ending with the domains ending with .com, .net and .org. About 200 to 600 million people were affected by the Internet outage in the country. Debates of whether it was a hacking or government issued are still being discussed.
What I immediately thought was what if this occurred here in the United States? What would I do if the Internet was down for 8 hours? What would people even more obsessed do? What would a country completely run by the Internet do in such a crisis?
Luckily, this shouldn’t happen here in our country because our government doesn’t have such a thing as the “Great Firewall” which has been guessed as the source of entry for the cyber attack (or government shutdown). We are lucky to live in a place with free range Internet and freedom of speech to all citizens. Safe to say I’m happy to be an American and do whatever my heart desires on the Internet (like writing this blog while also watching the Miami Heat game)…
